Happy New Year!

Well 2019 is here at least.  Someone posted on Facebook that 1999 was officially 20 years ago.  Wow its amazing to think of how much has changed since then!  In 20 years we've learned that Y2K is nothing to worry about, changed presidents 3 times, no longer allow anything more deadly than a toothpick to be carried on airplanes, buy everything that is worth owning online, and we can now pay internet strangers to pick us up and drive us places in their cars.

I think its easy to get caught in nostalgia traps on how things used to be, as nothing ever was how we remember it.  Memories have a way of changing with time to become better than they ever were, or far worse.  However, I do think its important to reflect on how far we have or haven't come over time.  Its the only way to gauge how much progress we've been able to make.  Its also important to look back as society and see where we've been and how far we've come.  Sometimes we're not as bad as we think, or otherwise we're far worse, but without proper retrospection, its impossible to know for sure.

Why the concept of New Years resolutions is a bit silly (spoiler alert: you'll be off that diet by February) as people we need short time spans to be able to set goals.  If we look at a whole life time, that's too long, but short chunks where we can focus on a specific change is much more doable.  The last two years and probably the next two have been transition years for me.  There are different things in life I am working towards completing and setting in motion, but its hard to be in these in between places.  So I guess what is my New Years resolution?  To keep working on what needs working on, improve what needs improving, and never stop reaching for that next goal no matter how many times I hear no.
